Environmental concerns are among the most pressing issues that individuals should prioritize. The severity of these problems, such as global warming, carbon emissions, and marine pollution, has been increasing gradually and dramatically. To demonstrate the gravity of these issues, I will present several statistics. To begin, let us examine a graph depicting the global average temperature.  As shown, the world's average temperature has steadily risen over the past 140 years, from 1880 to 2020. The average temperature experienced fluctuations between nearly -0.25 degrees Celsius and 0.20 degrees Celsius from 1880 to 1980. However, from 1980 onwards, the figure saw a substantial increase of approximately 0.75 degrees Celsius. It is important to note that while temperatures fluctuate significantly in our local area, global temperatures mainly depend on how much energy the planet receives from the Sun and how much it radiates back into space.   These days, many people focus on serious poverty problem. Generally, poverty people mean people who live by using under $1.9 per day. Now 736 million people is suffered from this problem, which mean 1 out of 10 people in the world. In addition, 146 countries are regarded as poverty country and these countries account for 74% overall. If the situation gets worse, a lot of problem will happen, such as decreasing the number of works, dropping the quality of education, and getting worse environment. Firstly, I would like to introduse this map . This map illustrates Where people live and How poor they are. As you can see from this map, there are any poor people in Europe and Central Asia. I think the atmosphere over the world is getting worse rapidly. Although our life has been improving with advances in technology, many problems have arisen. The change of atmosphere in the world is one of the most serious problems which must be solved as soon as possible.  The first graph shows CO2 emissions between 1900 and 2014. As you can see, the amount of carbon emissions is going up. Especially, there is a dramatic increase since 1950. Over a period of about 100 years, carbon emissions increased tenfold. It is an unbelievable change. The second graph illustrates how the global average temperature changed compared to the middle of the 20th century. According to the bar chart, the world is getting hotter year by year. We can say that global warming is progressing significantly. The last picture indicates a risk of air pollution. Poverty is a severe problem worldwide because 1 in 10 people are still poor now. However, the situation is getting better.  First, look at this graph. This is a paper from the World Bank describing the challenges of estimating consumption and income in extremely poor settings in 2015. The number of people who live in poverty and extreme poverty gradually decrease between 1820 and 1960.  In addition, the number of people who live in poverty rapidly went down to 24% by 2000. the amount of people who live in extreme poverty was also 52% in 2000.  I would like to talk about health. I think the health of the world is getting better than in the past. The first graph shows the changes in life expectancy in Japan between 2000 and 2019. In 2000, the life expectancy of women was 84.6 years old, and that of men was 77.72 years old. However, in 2019, the life expectancy of women was 87.45 years old. So, life expectancy increased by about three years. Also, the life expectancy of men in 2019 was 81.41 years old. Life expectancy increased by about four years old.   Hi, my name is David Woodfield. I live in Maori Hill in Dunedin, NZ, together with my wife, Patricia, our dog, Neo, and our cat, QT. I like Dunedin because of its compact size and its hilly setting. It doesn't take long to go anywhere round town and I like the views that the hills afford. My favourite subject at high school was Art History. I’m teaching this English language course in fulfilment of my duties as a teacher at the University of Otago. My likes include reading, watching TV and walking. I like reading books about faith, art & society. As for TV, I enjoy watching romantic movies.
