Is Is Getting Better----Lu Gan

According to the World Bank's definition of $1.90 a day, about 710 million people will remain in extreme poverty in 2021 (about one in 10 of the global population). More than 85 percent live in 20 countries. In the past, the vast majority of the world's population lived in conditions of extreme poverty. The proportion of the world's population living in absolute poverty has fallen from more than 80% in 1800 to less than 20% in 2015. That's up from 1.9 billion in 1990 and 1.2 billion in 2008. While there are still many people below the international poverty line, these figures represent significant progress for the international community because they show that one billion people have been lifted out of extreme poverty in the past 15 years, the vast majority of them in China. .

People living in extreme poverty are still unable to meet their most basic needs, such as health care, education, water and sanitation. The poverty rate in rural areas of the world is 17.2 percent, more than three times that of urban areas.
The heartbreaking truth is that one in five children lives in extreme poverty. Ensuring social protection for all children and other vulnerable groups is key to poverty reduction.

Half of the world's poor live in just five countries

Of the 736 million people living in extreme poverty worldwide in 2015, half (368 million) were concentrated in just five countries: India, Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, and Bangladesh. These five countries also happen to be the most populous in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, which together account for 85% of the world's poor (629 million). Poverty has many dimensions, but its causes include unemployment, war, lack of resources, and the extreme vulnerability of Governments and some groups to disasters, disease and other phenomena that prevent them from being productive.
