What I Wish I Had Known About Kiwi Culture -- Asaka Matsuda
I have one thing about Kiwi culture which I wish I had known before I came to New Zealand.
I think that how people in NZ perceive time is quite different from Japanese people. The first day when I came here, I was really surprised that my host family went to bed at 8 pm and got up at 5 am. I had felt they were very early to bed and rise, but I noticed it was normal in NZ. In NZ, most shops are open in the early morning and closed early and some are crowded. In Japan, it is rare that cafes to be open at 7am and closed at 3pm. Also, I think NZ people do not spend their holidays in bed. They find something to do such as gardening or painting, I was surprised because it is normal for me to stay up late and get up at around 12pm on weekends. Before I came here, I was a night owl and lazy, but I am trying to get used to the early-to-bed and early-to-rise culture.
You should get up early. This is because you can use time effectively!(^^)!
